People who are unhappy with the look or shape of their noses, or who have difficulty breathing normally often develop an interest in rhinoplasty. If you’re among them, you need to learn about this procedure before you step into it. Rhinoplasty can be used to change a lot about a nose, from size and width to the shape and position of nostrils. The tip of the nose can be reshaped, the look corrected, and breathing difficulties can be fixed. |

Rhinoplasty is really any surgical procedure that reshapes the nose, and may also be called a nose job. Rhinoplasty is for men and women. There are some important things to think about before you have one of these procedures done.
Before you have any kind of surgery, you’ll have to avoid eating or drinking for about six to twelve hours, you won’t be able to smoke, and you’ll have to discontinue a number of medications. That keeps you from having side effects or complications and speeds up healing.
Your surgeon must know about any drugs, vitamins, and herbal preparations you take, as well as your daily activities and any health conditions you suffer. Talk to him or her about everything, even if it doesn’t seem relevant.
Plastic surgery in nose is among the top five cosmetic surgery procedures, and has a long history of success. However, you could still suffer from some side effects, from bleeding or infection to nasal obstruction or an undesirable appearance after surgery.
There are two basic types of rhinoplasty - primary and secondary. Primary rhinoplasty is further divided into open and closed surgeries.
Open rhinoplasty is a major nose rehshaping, in which incisions are made in the strip of skin between the nostrils, or columella. Then the skin is removed and pulled up off of the nose’s structure so that the nasal anatomy is clear, and replaced later.
Closed rhinoplasty is a more minor procedure, with less severe incisions. Secondary rhinoplasties are done to correct problems from previous surgeries, and may take a long time.
There is also a surgery called a filler rhinoplasty. Filling agents or cartilage are used to fill in depressions, so that tissue does not need to be removed.
If you’re interested in this kind of surgery, you’ll have to talk to your surgeon about your anatomy and expectations. Bring pictures that you like to show the surgeon what you want, and think about having other procedures you want performed at the same time.
Rhinoplasty itself takes between fifteen minutes and a few hours, and is done on an outpatient basis with local anesthesia and sedation, or general anesthesia.
After rhinoplasty it takes a while to recover, and you may not be able to breathe through your nose for the first twenty-four hours. Pain medication will be used for about two days, and you may experience nausea.
For the first few days post op rhinoplasty, bleeding is common, and cold compresses and head elevation is important. Don’t allow your nose to be traumatized, and use decongestants instead of blowing your nose.
