The human nose is considered to be the feature having the most impact on facial appearance. There are often ethnic differences in nasal shape as well. An Asian nose job is a type of procedure that is used to alter the shape of the Asian nose to give it more Caucasian characteristics. This involves increasing the height, decreasing the width, and refining the shape of the tip. The procedure is often referred to as an ‘ethnic nose job’. The majority of nose job patients in the past have been mostly concerned with the reduction of size. In recent years, the very nature of facial beauty has shifted. The main idea of the procedure is not to attempt to cover up the unique ethnic differences or enhance the nose reduce it or otherwise, but rather to enhance the natural beauty in them. In other words, the idea is not to make Asians look less Asian, or Africans to look less African. Rather, the idea is to make them look more so by increasing the natural balance of the face.
The actual procedures used do not differ from traditional nose jobs used on Caucasians. This has led to some confusion. Some people have viewed these procedures as a totally different type of Medical procedure similar to acupuncture or herbal healing. The method of surgery and the recovery time and surgical risks are the same. The growing desire of people to look better and look younger, but also to retain the ethnic qualities that make them unique and beautiful, has led to an increase in Asian nose job procedures. As with all cosmetic surgical procedures, patient expectations and desires play a large part in the ultimate decision of what should be done. The surgeon has the knowledge of what is possible and together the patient and nose doctor can develop a surgical plan that can produce the desired results. It is important to understand that there are no exact scientific formulas as to what constitutes beauty. It is a largely subjective area and subject to cultural differences in perception. Ultimately, despite any ethic or racial differences, the goal is to make you look the way that makes you feel best and satisfies your own sense of beauty.
